Edible Glitter™ and PHOs

Edible Glitter™ Contains no Partially Hydrogenated Vegetable Oil

The Food and Drug Administration announced on June 16th that it has finalized its determination that partially hydrogenated oils (PHOs), the primary dietary source of industrially produced trans-fat, are not Generally Recognized As Safe (GRAS) for use in human food. Food manufacturers have until June 18, 2018, to remove PHOs from their products.

Therefore, it felt like good timing to remind everyone that Edible Glitter™ contains no PHOs. One of the most common types of sprinkles, known in many parts of the country as “Jimmies” or “shots”, do contain PHOs. Generally, partially hydrogenated vegetable oils are the third ingredient listed on the ingredient statement for jimmies.

INGREDIENTS: Gum Arabic, FD&C Red #3, FD&C Red #40, FD&C Blue #1, FD&C Yellow #5.

By the way, if you want to learn more about gum arabic, check out my post from May 19th on this blog.

There are several product applications that come to mind immediately. These are products that just would not be the same without sprinkles. For example, the soft serve ice cream cone - fun all year around, but definitely a summer-time favorite. Every town has at least one favorite ice cream spot, with lines stretching across the parking lot on any given summer afternoon. What child doesn’t like to choose their sprinkles … rainbow or chocolate?

Ice cream cones in the summer would just not be the same without sprinkles. But they don’t have to be the Jimmies-type sprinkles made with PHOs. Edible Glitter™ looks great on ice cream. It works well with both soft serve and hard scoop ice cream. Carnival Edible Glitter™ Flakes (gum arabic based) will replace rainbow sprinkles. Edible Glitter™ is also available in flavors, so chocolate glitter is no problem at all. We can replace the chocolate sprinkles as well.

Next on my list would be cupcakes. You can’t have party cupcakes without sprinkles! Sprinkles also make cupcakes fit in with any party theme or holiday theme. Again, Edible Glitter™ works great on cupcakes too, so you don’t have to go without the sprinkles. Just switch to Edible Glitter™

Last but not least on my list would be cookies. Holiday and specialty cookies need sprinkles too. Edible Glitter™ can be applied to the cookie dough before baking or applied to the frosting if the cookies are being decorated.

No PHOs is just one great advantage of Edible Glitter™, but it is not the only one! Check out all the reasons you should consider updating your sprinkles here.
